Liquid Gas Ireland (LGI) has today (19.05.25) announced the appointment of former TD, Alan Farrell as Senior Director of Government Affairs and Policy. Mr Farrell will lead the policy, advocacy and communications efforts of LGI which represents companies operating in the liquid gas (LPG) and renewable liquid gas (BioLPG) industry.
Setting out his vision for the role Mr Farrell said: “I’m truly excited to be joining Liquid Gas Ireland at what is a pivotal period for the sector. As Ireland works towards its 2050 climate targets, the need for a multifaceted approach to decarbonising the energy needs of homes and businesses must be recognised. Highlighting how the liquid gas sector is uniquely placed to address the challenge of difficult to decarbonise rural homes and businesses, is a key focus for me.
“I look forward to building a wider understanding among policy makers of how the sector is already supporting rural decarbonisation by transitioning homes and businesses to lower carbon LPG and renewable BioLPG. However, I am keen to emphasise how the sector can play an even greater role in this regard through a blend of policy supports in parity with other renewables. As we seek to advance the industries ambition to fully transition to renewable liquid gas, there are also opportunities to unlock indigenous production here in Ireland. This will require supportive investment to create the conditions for attracting future production capacity which should be considered in line with policies supporting indigenous biomethane production.”
Prior to joining LGI, Mr Farrell spent 14 years in the Oireachtas where he represented Dublin Fingal as a Fine Gael TD and in his latter months, as a Senator. During his time in Leinster House, he served as chair of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party (2024 - 2025) and held the Fine Gael Party Whip (2022 - 2024). He also chaired the joint Oireachtas committees on Transport & Communications (2024) and Children & Youth Affairs (2017 - 2020). Other notable committees Mr Farrell contributed to included Climate Action; Justice; Education; Public Accounts; and Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform.
Commenting, CEO of Calor Ireland, Duncan Osborne said: “As a member of LGI, we are delighted to welcome Alan to the Association. His long standing political and policy experience will be critical in highlighting how lower carbon LPG and renewable BioLPG are an enabler to making meaningful progress in decarbonising rural homes and businesses. By embracing a mixed-technology approach, policymakers have a real opportunity to deliver more inclusive and realistic pathways to achieving Ireland’s retrofitting and decarbonisation targets, ensuring no consumer is left behind”.
Also, welcoming Mr Farrell’s appointment, Managing Director of the LPG Business Unit at Flogas, Kevin Donnelly said: “Alan will be a strong advocate for the voice of rural off natural gas grid energy consumers who are looking for accessible and affordable options to reduce their energy emissions. Through his experience on the Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action, Alan has an established understanding of the ‘lived reality’ in decarbonising rural Ireland and the pragmatic policy solutions required to address these issues.”
