Liquid Gas Ireland (LGI) welcomes the announcement of a new energy support grant for businesses that use liquid gas (LPG) as part of the Government’s cost-of-living package. The Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS) was introduced in 2022 to support qualifying businesses with increases in their electricity and fuel costs over the winter months. The scheme however excluded unmetered fuels such LPG used by many businesses located off the national gas grid.
LGI Policy Director, Philip Hannon said: “It is very welcome that the Government has listened to the concerns of the industry and its many business consumers in rural Ireland who are users of LPG and BioLPG. Large swaths of businesses that are off the natural gas grid, particularly those in the hospitality and tourism sector, rely on fuels such as LPG and BioLPG and have been unable to access any support for their spiralling energy costs. This announcement will come as a relief to many, and we look forward to seeing how these supports will work.”
LGI recently launched a report, ‘Liquid Gas - Making the ‘Just Transition’ more sustainable for rural Ireland’, demonstrating how lower carbon and renewable fuels like LPG and BioLPG, offer significant potential to assist rural Ireland to decarbonise.
